CONGRATULATIONS ANDY GULIJ -- Winner of 2010 GEMMY AWARD.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gulij - 2009 gemmy winner Always a creative guy, Andy Gulij has developed unique fantasy designs, for which he has won a number of prizes. Now, in the 2010 Gemmys Competition he was awarded first place for "Strawberry Fields Forever" -- shown in the photo is a 33 ct beauty. The "Gemmy's" are annual awards established by Jewery Artist magazine
"Strawberry Fields Forever" placed first in its category of "Specially Cut Gems", and then became 'first of the first', being awarded BEST IN COMPETITION. Of course, this is not Andy's first appearance in the SomeTimes. He's sure to be back again in the future.
Andy's experience in recent years has been heavy in the area of Fantasy cutting, including awards in that category. Located in San Diego as he is,  an easy drive from our Santa Ana facility-- Andy was a 'natural' to be our 'test pilot' and consultant in evaluating the new Concave and Fantasy Machines. We were more than a little pleased that he agreed to do that,  and it was clear the Andy welcomed the opportunity. It has been, all in all, a valuable experience -- we learned that Andy was not only an expert gem cutter but a clever mechanical engineer as well.
gulij2 Andy's creations offer inspiration for the aspiring Fantasy cutter. I particularly like the award winning "New Heights" -- see the photo below --  it is a beauty that doesn't need words. It speaks for itself.
I wanted to see "New Heights", but Andy explained that it wasn't in his shop, it had been sold. Well  that's a bit of "bittersweet"-  and Andy's little smile and shrug betrayed that. Selling what he produces is his goal but it's not always easy to see special creations leave home.
Gulij new heights Check out his website, it's www.gemfix.com. If you visit Tucson, Andy is in the TGMS.
