THE MAST controls the position of the stone—radial dial, axial angle, and vertical position. The Mast provides the key to REPEATABILITY. THE MAST’S ACCURACY, FIRMNESS, and STURDINESS is a prime feature. Unlike “floating” designs, which give way to the wedging action of the stone against the lap, the Ultra Tec Mast is completely resistant to undesired movement—it’s rigid enough so that very small angles, even 3 or 4, can be placed on the gemstone (this allows for easy shallow table facets--of the sort which is increasingly popular in modern gem designs). Also, the Mast’s firmness allows the performing of stones without special support. THE ANGLE DIAL (A) sets the axial angle. Precision in setting this angle is critical to excellence in faceting. The Angle Dial, unlike a conventional protractor, is geared in a 6 to 1 ratio, providing exceptional accuracy--with spacings equivalent to a 12 inch protractor. It is a constant read-out device, telling you the angular position at each moment, and it has an easy-to-learn vernier readout, with repeatable 1/10 positions. The fine adjustments knob permits the “dialing-in” of the exact angle. Its antibacklash design assures repeatability. The dial indicator attachment (P) is a great optional add-on for the seeing "action" that occurs between the stone and the lap during faceting. The Mast is continuously calibrated, with a metric readout (if you’re more comfortable with English measurement, don’t be concerned. The scale is metric since gemstones are measured metrically---you will soon be thinking that way too). The stainless steel leadscrew (C) sets the position, and the top readout (D) has shows increments of .02mm (less than .0008inch). There is no backlash and no locking device to cause distortion---you set the position, let go---it’s there. Its repeatability is exact. The handle (E) allows a light pressure, dampening excessive pressure against the lap. THE INDEXING SYSTEM controls the radial position. The Index Gear (F) is a true in volute gear, and the detent that locks that position is a true in volute gear segment. This assures accurate centering and accurate rotation during use of the index vernier (G) (the “cheater”). The index vernier is a unique design, offering a single dial control with increments of 1/10, again providing exceptional accuracy and repeatability. Use of the index vernier does not affect any other setting on the machine. DOP ALIGNMENT---The Dop (H), which holds the stone while you work on it, can be removed and later accurately reinserted. It is keyed for both rational position and depth by a chamfer at the back of the dop, which engages a cross-pin. A Calibration Bar is provided to maintain precise alignment as an Index Gear is changed. (All of this makes it an ideal machine for school or family use. It allows interruption of the work, while someone else uses the machine---or while you use the machine for another stone---and allows getting back accurately to the previous position). If you are considering Ultra Tec as a replacement of another machine, incidentally, you will probably be able to use your former dops, just by adding that rear chamfer---it can be done easily. After half the stone has been completed, a transfer is performed keyed-dop-to-keyed-dop, and the pavilion facets are aligned with the crown facets. Sometimes, the facetor wishes to rotationally offset the pavilion and crown facets---some designs call for that---in which case the keying feature can be overridden. READABILITY OF CONTROLS All scales provide ease readability. The backgrounds are black and the numbers are contrasting white. The dials are flush, eliminating any parallax problems. POSITIONING ON BASE The head is easily positioned with approximately 9 inches of horizontal movement. The base lock (J) holds the position firmly. The head can be easily removed for transportation or cleaning purposes. SMOOTHNESS OF MOVEMENTS Throughout, Ultra Tec uses precision ball bearings, resulting in a virtually friction free sense of feel. These ball bearings never require adjustment or lubrication. TABLE GRINDING AND POLISHING The Tabling Adapter provides exceptional firmness, gripping the outside diameter of the Spindle, and placing the stone very close to the end of the Spindle, thus minimizing the sideward pressures that bother traditional inside-gripping tabling adapters.
